OIA launches ‘Help Hub’ for outdoor professionals

Outdoor Professionals such as mountaineering, climbing, cycling, canoeing and snowsport instructors working in the outdoor sector have been hit incredibly hard with the loss of income caused by the rapid spread of the Coronavirus and the lockdowns introduced in countries across Europe which prevent them from earning a living.

Both the self-employed and those running small businesses are no longer able to function as their livelihoods have effectively been closed down overnight with the cancellation of courses, events and expeditions caused by the recently imposed restrictions – see example here

A very comprehensive and recent report by British Mountain Guide, Calum Muskett highlights the impact on the sector and a copy of the full report can be downloaded here.

The report has prompted the OIA to pledge to help provide a resource for the ‘Outdoor Professional’ with the launch of an online ‘Help Hub’ accessed via the OIA website.  The Help Hub will allow individuals and organisations which represent the self-employed, the opportunity to share ideas and upload useful information to the sector by sharing links, resources, downloads and anything relevant to freelancers, the self-employed and small businesses.

The OIA’s Chief Executive, Andrew Denton has already written to many organisations in the sector which represent the self-employed outdoor professional to share Calum’s report and with the suggestion of building this resource.  Andrew comments, “The industry is in crisis and most outdoor professionals working both in the UK and abroad have been badly affected with immediate loss of earnings.  We recently launched our Daily COVID-19 Help Hub Newsletter for the outdoor sector and we see this as another small step in offering what assistance that we can to the industry in these unprecedented and challenging times.”
